SEO Statistics 2026: Sourced Numbers on Search, Clicks, and Rankings

TL;DR
Google handles more than 5 trillion searches a year and holds 91% of the worldwide market, mobile and desktop are level, and 68% of US searches now end without a click. Position one still takes about a quarter of clicks where people do click, and the typical first-page result is more than three years old. Every figure links to the study that produced it, with its date and sample.

Where these numbers come from

Most statistics roundups copy each other. Figures get rounded, lose their year, and end up attributed to the wrong study. This page links each figure to the organisation that produced the data, states the sample and period it covers, and replaces superseded figures instead of stacking them. Where an older figure is still the best available, such as Ahrefs' 2023 count of pages with no Google traffic, the row says so. If you cite a number from here, cite the original study and its date.

Key figures at a glance

  1. 5 trillion+ Google searches a year, about 13.7 billion a day (Google, March 2025).
  2. 91.1% worldwide search share for Google; 86.1% in the US (StatCounter, August 2026).
  3. 49.36% vs 49.11% mobile versus desktop web usage worldwide (StatCounter, August 2026).
  4. 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 (SparkToro).
  5. 27.6% average CTR for the first organic result; the top three take 54.4% (Backlinko).
  6. 58% lower position-one CTR when an AI Overview is present (Ahrefs).
  7. 72.9% of top-10 pages are more than three years old (Ahrefs).
  8. 96.55% of pages get no Google traffic at all (Ahrefs, 2023).

Search volume, market share, and devices

Demand for search has not fallen. Google's 2025 disclosure more than doubled its last official volume figure, and its market share has moved by fractions of a point while its results pages changed a great deal. The US is the one large market where Bing holds a meaningful share. Mobile's long lead over desktop has closed to a near tie in StatCounter's worldwide data.

Zero-click searches

Two-thirds of US searches now resolve on the results page. Part of that is Google answering directly, part is people refining a query, and part is clicks to Google's own properties, which the SparkToro method counts as zero-click. The AI-specific rows are included here because they explain most of the recent movement; the full set of AI search figures lives on a separate page.

Click-through rate by position

Position benchmarks predate the spread of AI Overviews and mix branded with unbranded queries, so they overstate what an informational page can expect today. They remain useful for one thing: the gap between positions is steep, and steepest at the top, which is why moving from page two to page one changes little and moving from third to first changes a lot.

Rankings, content, and links

Ahrefs publishes the largest index-wide studies on what ranks. Some are older than the click studies above but have not been repeated at the same scale by anyone else. Treat them as structural facts about the web rather than 2026 trends: most pages earn nothing from search, most keywords are tiny, and pages that rank keep earning links after they get there.

Reading the numbers correctly

  • Benchmark against your own Search Console history first. Industry averages mix query types your site never competes for.
  • Rising impressions with flat clicks is now a normal pattern on informational pages, not evidence of a ranking problem.
  • A 2023 index study and a 2026 panel study can both be true and still not be comparable. Keep the date and sample with any figure you quote.
  • Retired figures such as the 53% organic-traffic share are left out on purpose. If a number you expected is missing, its primary source is probably too old.
